Lindsey Hilsum wins James Tait Black Prize

Lindsey Hilsum won the James Tait Black Prize for her biography of Marie Colvin, IN EXTREMIS. The £10,000 prize awarded each year by the University of Edinburgh, were announced by broadcaster Sally Magnusson at the Edinburgh International Book Festival on Saturday (17th August).

After finding out that she was unable to have biological children, palaeontologist Elsa Panciroli set out to challenge the story we think we know about inheritance and reproduction. Beyond `survival of the fittest` and `the biological imperative` lies a more complex story of evolutionary history - species without their own offspring are not only common, but essential to life. THE UNFITTEST is a fascinating reorientation of how we look at ourselves, our ancestry, and our future - a celebration of the individuals and species who can`t or don`t have children.

Elsa is a Scottish palaeontologist and biologist who studies the early origins and evolution of mammals. She is the author of BEASTS BEFORE US (Bloomsbury Sigma, 2021), praised by the New York Times as `smart, passionate and seditious`, and THE EARTH: A BIOGRAPHY OF LIFE (Quercus, 2022).

She is an Associate Researcher at National Museums Scotland, a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Research Fellow at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and an EPA Cephalosporin Junior Research Fellow at Linacre College, Oxford.
